James studied classical and contemporary acting theory at Western Washington University, earning BAs in both Acting and Creative Writing. He also performed as an ensemble member of The Dead Parrots Society improv team, earning national awards and hundreds of hours on stage.

For his lead performance in the stage play Terra Nova, James was nominated for and went on to win an Irene Ryan Acting Scholarship in addition to The Mark Twain Comedy Award, performing his own written work at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC.

James moved to LA in late 2012, performing improv and character stand-up in the indie comedy scene, including classes at The Groundling's Theatre.

McGrath voiced Wizzie the talking alarm clock in Dreamworks Animation's feature films The Boss Baby and Boss Baby: Family Business plays Young Newt Scamander in the new and ongoing adventures of Harry Potter: Magic Awakening.
